Sri Lanka is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries on earth – verdant jungle, golden beaches and a smile on every person you’ll meet. This autumn, our friends at Resplendent Ceylon are giving their guests the chance to join their initiatives that support local communities and celebrate local culture, with a new Giving Getaways programme.
The journey begins at Tea Trails, where you’ll start off on the green foot by joining the reforesting programme – not only a great way to offset your carbon emissions, but also one that contributes to creating a conservation corridor for Sri Lankan leopards. Guests will also have the opportunity to analyse data with resident naturalists at the Leopard Research Station, and learn the craft of creating the humble cup of tea at the Dunkeld Tea Factory.
Next, head to nature-lovers paradise Wild Coast Tented Lodge, where you’ll have the chance to assist on capturing data from ten new camera traps around the lodge, or head out with resident birder to learn the migration patterns and calls of local wildlife. You’ll also have the chance to hone a new skill with a cycle tour to nearby village Bundala, where a pottery class with a local collective awaits.
Finally, head south to Cape Weligama, where you can spend days volunteering at neighbouring MJF Centre. Whether you’re a maths whizz, creative spirit or consider yourself a bit of a sports star, you’ll have the chance to help lead a range of educational and vocational workshops for local children. And if you’re travelling with a child yourself, new friendships are nurtured through the Resplendent Ceylon PenPal programme.
So if you’re looking to meet local communities, foster new friendships and celebrate indigenous wildlife, the Giving Getaways programme offers just that. There’s really no better way to explore this humble, generous, kind country.
