Embracing the cold: Wim Hoff wellness, surfing & coasteering in Cornwall

Three Mile Beach launches new three-night cold water therapy programme

As the positive benefits of cold-water immersion continue to garner widespread intrigue, this November Three Mile Beach – a collection of luxury beach houses on the North Cornish coastline – will launch a Cold Water Therapy programme; a three-night experience incorporating various ways to enjoy the reinvigorating and restorative properties of water and is available for individuals and private groups.

Through bracing surf lessons, adrenaline-fuelled coasteering and newly-introduced private Wim Hof Method workshops – a synergy of breathwork, hot & cold therapy, restorative yoga, sound healing and meditation – you will experience first-hand how this combination holds transformative psychological and physiological health benefits, from improving mental health, to boosting the immune system, reversing inflammation, and increasing metabolism.

The first day of the programme starts by taking advantage of Three Mile Beach’s unrivalled location just a stone’s throw from Gwithian Beach, as you take to the seas with a talented instructor from next-door surf school, Global Boarders, for a morning private surf lesson. Over two hours, you will uncover the therapeutic nature of surfing that has recently been hailed as a driver for treating anxiety, stress and even PTSD, with the sport now prescribed by the NHS for effectively improving confidence, resilience, and self-esteem*. Come early afternoon, the programme continues in the privacy of your own beach house with a dedicated Wim Hof Method workshop led by a qualified instructor from Cornwall-based health and wellbeing movement, Soul Sweats. In this five-hour workshop, you will be introduced to the three powerful pillars of the Wim Hof Method: Breathing Technique, Cold Therapy and Commitment. The workshop will begin with conscious breathwork as you are guided through rhythmic inhalations and exhalations that encourage command over the body leading to a deep state of relaxation. This practice is combined with hot and cold therapy on the outdoor wrap-around terrace, as you flow between an ice filled oak barrel and their private cedar-wood barrel sauna. A meditative sound bath on the beach will follow, as you are taken on a journey of self-discovery, healing and connection, before a restorative yin yoga class, encouraging inner focus, grounding and support of the body’s digestive system.

The following day will commence with a three-hour guided coasteering session in the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole, aimed to ignite adrenaline while offering a unique perspective of this spectacular stretch of Cornish coastline. As one of the fastest-growing adventure sports, coasteering is one for the daring, combining wild sea swimming with low-level traversing, bouldering, and steep cliff rock jumping. Physically challenging and mentally exhilarating, you will put your recently learnt breathing techniques into action to calm the heart rate and blood pressure, mirroring how to cope with the body’s reaction to stress in other aspects of life. Connecting with nature’s blue spaces, you will also discover how the rise and fall of the tides affect the coastal landscape, from the creation of tidal whirlpools to sea caves filled with natural wonder. Come afternoon, you can explore the three miles of golden sands backed by dunes and coastal grasses with a picturesque coastal hike, opt for a bracing wild swim, or head back to the comfort of your beach house for a sumptuous soak in their private sunken cedarwood hot tub, soothe aching muscles in the barrel sauna or warm cold toes in front of the roaring log burner.
