BIRD appointed to launch Tengile MalaMala Collection in South Africa’s Sabi Sand

Tengile MalaMala Collection marks the launch of a new safari collection, and the unification of six lodges and heritage camps within one of Africa’s richest wildlife landscapes.

BIRD is delighted to announce the partnership and launch of Tengile MalaMala Collection, a new owner-led, community-empowered safari brand in one of Africa’s most revered wilderness regions. Set along a protected stretch of the Sand River in South Africa’s Sabi Sand, the collection brings together five contemporary lodges and heritage camps, with a sixth property, Khensani River Lodge, set to debut in December 2026.

Defined by quiet luxury, conservation leadership and genuine community partnership, the collection represents a considered evolution of a safari legacy spanning almost a century.

Ownership with Purpose

Owned by the N’wandlamhari Communal Property Association, together with the Saad family – led by father-daughter duo Stephen and Savannah Saad – Tengile MalaMala Collection is one of South Africa’s few eco-tourism enterprises where community equity, land restitution and benefit-sharing are integral. Community equity, land restitution and benefit-sharing are central to the collection’s foundation, ensuring the prosperity of neighbouring Shangaan communities is woven directly into the success and stewardship of the land.

Distinct Lodges, Shared Heritage

Stretching across twenty kilometres of the Sand River in Mpumalanga, with a fenceless boundary into Kruger National Park, the reserve supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife movement and biodiversity on the continent, offering front-row access to Africa’s ‘Big-7’ – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and African wild dog.

  • Khensani River Lodge (Opening December 2026) – the sixth lodge to join the collection, with nine suites featuring private plunge pools and viewing decks, centred around a main house with dining spaces, spa, library and swimming pool.
  • Tengile River Lodge – a design-forward lodge positioned directly on the banks of the Sand River, with nine spacious suites each featuring private decks and plunge pools overlooking the river.
  • Rattray’s Lodge – an exclusive, heritage-led retreat with eight villa-style suites, each with a private garden and plunge pool for complete privacy.
  • Kirkman’s Kamp – a historic 1920s hideaway preserving classic safari charm with 12 semi-detached cottages, some interconnecting for families.
  • MalaMala Camp – the flagship camp of the reserve with a mix of luxury suites and rooms suited to families, groups and solo travellers.
  • Sable Camp – an intimate sister property to MalaMala Camp with seven suites, including the two-bedroom Lion’s Den, and shared viewing decks and pools.

Together, the collection offers a choice between modern design and traditional safari character, without compromising on privacy, space or immersion.

Environmental Stewardship & Social Impact

Conservation underpins the collection’s philosophy, with ongoing investment in anti-poaching operations, habitat management and ecological research. Rhino protection remains a defining priority, supported by extensive ranger presence, aerial surveillance and advanced monitoring systems, alongside predator research – including the African wild dog – in collaboration with specialist partners such as Panthera.

Beyond the reserves, the MalaMala Foundation and Mintirho Community Development Trust, support education, skills development, enterprise growth and critical infrastructure in neighbouring communities, from bursaries and lodge-based internships to school facilities and water-access projects such as the Hippo Roller initiative.

Culinary & Guest experiences

Dining is seasonal and ingredient-led, celebrating local produce and open-fire cooking, with meals served on riverside decks, under starlight in candlelit bomas, in-suite on private terraces, or in intimate, relaxed lounge settings. Wine lists showcase South Africa’s leading labels alongside carefully selected independent vineyards. Beyond the table, experiences centre on the surrounding landscape and its wildlife, with twice-daily game guided bush walks wellness moments including in-suite massages, spa treatments and private yoga.
